Okay, if you have done those things, then you have a lot of awareness about what happens when you experience too much stress! Ready for some relief?!
Anytime you sense your stress level rising (anytime you experience those pesky “messages” such as feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, difficulty relaxing, or even sick to your stomach), STOP!
Chances are, in these moments you are probably thinking about significantly more than the very task or person in front of you. Right? Have you ever sat through a meeting at work with your mind spinning about a problem at home? Or, you have lunch with a friend, but your focus is on all you need to accomplish later that day?
The truth is, stress levels rise when your attention is in overdrive. Conversely, if you bring your attention fully to the present moment, your stress decreases! This is called mindfulness. It’s a game-changer. Mindfulness simply means bringing your entire attention to the present moment, accepting it as it is, and letting go of everything else! It’s choosing to engage fully in one thing at a time.
- At work, you keep your thoughts focused on your work responsibilities.
- If you are eating dinner with your family, you let go of thinking about your to-do list, what happened earlier in the day, or what you are worried might happen tomorrow. You are PRESENT with your family as you eat dinner!
- If you are at the gym, you fully engage in your workout and enjoy yourself! You choose not to think about everything else in your life and actually enter into the moment.
Get the idea? MINDFULNESS MEANS FULLY ENGAGING WITH ONE THING AT A TIME!
I promise, your productivity will not decrease (it will increase!), and your stress will decrease!
GIVE IT A TRY! Do a little experiment and see how it feels today!
